Sears Shamelessly Praises Trump's Tariffs as Virginians Face More Layoffs
Recent reporting from The Roanoke Times found a new round of layoffs at the Volvo Trucks New River Valley plant in Dublin could cause more than 350 autoworkers in Southwest Virginia to lose their jobs due in part to "the impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs." This comes after a previous wave of layoffs at the plant, which saw about 180 jobs lost.

As these Virginians and more are losing their jobs as a result of Donald Trump'sattacks on their workforce and economy, recent audio of Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears found that she was telling supporters that she thinks that massively increasing prices across everyday goods and services is "good" and to the "benefit" of Virginians.
Since Trump has been in office, Sears has proudly embraced his policies that are making it harder for workers to pay their bills and support their families, and even mocked those who have lost their jobs by saying that she "doesn't understand why" Virginians getting laid off is a "huge, huge thing."
"After 180 Virginians at the Volvo Plant in Pulaski County lost their jobs in February, Trump's senseless tariffs could put another 350 out of work, yet Sears still thinks they are 'good'," said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. "How many Virginians have to lose their jobs before Sears finally speaks out against Trump's attacks on Virginia's jobs and economy?"

On Your TV: Democratic Governors Slam Trump's Tariffs and Threats to Federal Funding and Health Care
While Trump continues to champion his job-killing tariffs and ramp up his administration's attacks on funding for Medicaid and agencies that support cancer research, Democratic governors took to national TV shows to condemn Trump's policies that continue to raise costs on everyday goods and directly hurt working families.
Here's how Democratic governors are speaking out, standing up for people in theirstates, and making real progress on the issues that matter most.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey on CBS's Face the Nation, MSNBC's The Beat with Ari Melber, and PBS's Amanpour & Company:"These cuts to universities have significant ripple effects, because they result in people being laid off, scientists being laid off, doctors being laid off ... It's bad for patients, it's bad for science, and it's really bad for American competitiveness."
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker on Fox News Sunday: "There's not a lot of respect for Social Security by this administration. They've sent DOGE in to basically tear it apart, they're closing down offices that our seniors need to access ... Republicans have been attacking Medicaid for years and years ... It's going to really hurt working families across the United States."
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on MSNBC's All In with Chris Hayes: "There were a lot of folks there saying 'none of this is what we voted for. None of this is what they talked about,' and so I think there is an awakening, if you will, of folks who are really engaging in a way I quite honestly haven't seen ...[Republican members of Congress] need to stand in front of [their constituents] and say why gutting the VA makes sense. Why did you allow an unelected official like Elon Musk to be able to take Social Security, to be able to take that data?"
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear on MSNBC's Inside with Jen Psaki: "Whether it's the tariffs that will make life more difficult or significant cuts to Medicaid, it's going to leave a lot of people who ended up voting for President Trump feeling betrayed ... [they] thought [Trump] was going to make life for them a little bit easier, and now, his policies are making it a lot harder."
Maine Governor Janet Mills on MSNBC's Morning Joe: "And when he said, 'I am the law,' my jaw dropped ... I have spent my career - the better part of my career - defending and protecting the rights of women and girls in health care, in employment, housing credit, and the like. I was appalled. I am appalled at his interpretation that he can just reinvent the law."
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont on MSNBC's Morning Joe and CBS America Decides: "Listen to the markets, they have spoken loud and clear ... 'Liberation day,' all you're doing is liberating hundreds of dollars a month from our wallets, and the markets collapsed ... right now, you're hurting the American consumer every day."
Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer on CNN Newsroom Live and NewsNation's The Hill: "There are tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members all across our country serving, hundreds of thousands who have served for years. That program is being gutted ... when people see their 401k disappearing, $11 trillion of lost retirement savings in the first 11 weeks of this president's administration, that resonates."

Nevadans Slam Joe Lombardo's Offensive Comments and Threats to Vital Programs that Working Families Have Earned
Over the weekend, thousands of Nevadans gathered in Las Vegas and Carson City to protest Joe Lombardo and his offensive comments mocking hardworking Nevadans. Earlier this month, Lombardo was caught on tape calling his constituents' protests against Trump's devastating agenda "stupid," insisting that all protesters were paid to be there, and saying his message to critics is "F-- you." He alsofalsely claimed, as Nevada struggles with the worst unemployment in the nation under him, that "people would rather manipulate the government process and receive unemployment or to sit at home versus occupying a job that's available."
This comes after Lombardo embraced Trump's disastrous tariffs and cuts to public education that will devastate hardworking Nevadans. Once again, Lombardo is making it clear that he is more interested in protecting his own reputation and billionaire backers than in advocating for working families across Nevada.
Read more about the protests against Lombardo's offensive rhetoric and his failure to stand up for working Nevadans:
* KOLO: "Crowds descended on Carson City on Saturday, April 19, to protest what they say is President Trump's 'hostile government takeover' and Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo's 'recent caustic, inaccurate and profanity-laced public speech.' When asked for a response, Lombardo's Press Secretary Josh Meny replied, 'no comment.'"
* Reno Gazette Journal: "Carrying a sign saying 'Now you've pissed off Granny,' Margaret Moore-Nadler said she'd never been to a protest before -- and she wasn't being paid. But Gov. Lombardo's comments were something she felt needed pushback."
* KTNV: "'No one is paid. Nobody gets a dime. Everyone is here because they are horrified, terrified, of what is going on in our country,' said Kathy Blair, Demonstrator."
* News 4: "At the same private Republican fundraiser where he called the protests stupid, Lombardo said his message for critics was 'F-- you' and that the protesters didn't want to work and prefer handouts instead."

Donald Trump Delivers Huge Blow to Karrin Taylor Robson's Campaign By Announcing Endorsement of Andy Biggs Too
In the increasingly chaotic and messy GOP primary for governor in Arizona, Donald Trump delivered a huge blow to Karrin Taylor Robson's campaign by announcing a new, dual endorsement that also includes Rep. Andy Biggs.
If that weren't devastating enough, just minutes after getting snubbed by Trump, Politico reported new polling from the Club for Growth that has Biggs leading Taylor Robsonby 29 points, the second poll this month showing her on the glide path to losing the GOP nomination again.
Taylor Robson previously centered her entire campaign around Trump saying he would support her in December. Both her and Biggs have supported Trump's extreme policies that are hurting Arizonans, including his chaotic tariffs that are jacking up costs.
"This is hands down the worst day of Karrin Taylor Robson's political career, which is a tough bar to reach considering she spent over $23 million in her 2022 loss to two-time loser Kari Lake," said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. "As Andy Biggs continues to surge in the polls, it's clear this GOP primary will continue to devolve into a nasty and expensive race to the far-right - and it's just getting started."

WASHINGTON, April 22 -- The Democratic National Committee issued the following news release:

Trump's Unfit and Unqualified Defense Secretary Must Resign After Sharing Critical Military Secrets AGAIN
In response to new reporting on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth exposing critical military plans with family members on an insecure device in violation of protocol, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"Pete Hegseth is a disgrace and completely unfit to lead the Department of Defense. In just a few months on the job, Hegseth has repeatedly put our national security at risk, jeopardized the safety of our men and women in uniform, and demonstrated staggering levels of incompetence. It's well past time for Hegseth to resign -- or for Donald Trump to fire him."
NEW: Trump's Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared critical military operational details AGAIN, putting active duty service members' lives at risk, threatening America's national security, and again raising questions about his fitness to lead from those closest to him.
New York Times: "Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared detailed information about forthcoming strikes in Yemen on March 15 in a private Signal group chat that included his wife, brother and personal lawyer, according to four people with knowledge of the chat.
"Some of those people said that the information Mr. Hegseth shared on the Signal chat included the flight schedules for the F/A-18 Hornets targeting the Houthis in Yemen ...
"One person familiar with the chat said Mr. Hegseth's aides had warned him a day or two before the Yemen strikes not to discuss such sensitive operational details in his Signal group chat, which, while encrypted, is not considered as secure as government channels typically used for discussing highly sensitive war planning and combat operations."
CNN: "Hegseth shared detailed military plans in second Signal chat that included his wife and brother"
"[T]he chat ... had more than a dozen people in it ...
"The revelation comes as some of Hegseth's closest advisers have begun sounding the alarm about the secretary's judgment, including his former press secretary, John Ullyot, and three former senior officials Hegseth fired last week -- his top adviser Dan Caldwell, deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick, and Colin Carroll, who served as chief of staff to the deputy secretary of defense.
"'It's been a month of total chaos at the Pentagon. From leaks of sensitive operational plans to mass firings, the dysfunction is now a major distraction for the president -- who deserves better from his senior leadership,' Ullyot said in a statement obtained by CNN. ...
"The turmoil has raised more concerns about Hegseth's judgment and priorities among current and former officials, and comes as the Pentagon is executing a major military operation in the Middle East against the Houthis, moving assets to the region in the event of a wider war between Israel and Iran, and surging troops and equipment to the southern border."
This is the second time Hegseth has exposed critical military operational details and risked active duty service members' lives.
The Atlantic: "The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans"
"At 11:44 a.m., the account labeled 'Pete Hegseth' posted in Signal a 'TEAM UPDATE.' I will not quote from this update, or from certain other subsequent texts. The information contained in them, if they had been read by an adversary of the United States, could conceivably have been used to harm American military and intelligence personnel, particularly in the broader Middle East, Central Command's area of responsibility. What I will say, in order to illustrate the shocking recklessness of this Signal conversation, is that the Hegseth post contained operational details of forthcoming strikes on Yemen, including information about targets, weapons the U.S. would be deploying, and attack sequencing. ...
"Brian Hughes, the spokesman for the National Security Council, responded two hours later, confirming the veracity of the Signal group."
REMINDER: Hegseth is the "least experienced defense secretary" in U.S. history and already faced major concerns about his fitness to lead before his confirmation.
NPR: "If confirmed, he would be the least experienced defense secretary in the history of the republic, going back to Henry Knox, the first secretary of war who was a key officer in Washington's army. Those who rise to that post often come from Capitol Hill, industry or the highest ranks of the officer corps."
Politico: "Hegseth, if confirmed by the Senate, would lead 1.3 million active-duty troops in uniform and more than 750,000 civilians, hold contentious meetings with U.S. allies and develop strike options against the Islamic State and Iranian proxies. And while Hegseth has military experience, he has never run an organization larger than a small nonprofit. ...
"'Folks are shocked,' said a current DOD official. 'He's just a Fox News personality that's never worked in the government.' ...
"'It is a massive bureaucracy, you have to understand how that works to support national security around the globe,' [another] official added. 'It is tedious and challenging and it is not at all related to getting on Fox News and pontificating.'"
Wall Street Journal: "Republican senators said that they want closer scrutiny of President-elect Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary. ... The former Fox News host was an unconventional choice for the top Pentagon job, as he has never led a large government agency, but the debate about his qualifications has been overshadowed by allegations related to his personal life."
Hegseth also has a history of inappropriate and abusive behavior -- including reports of sexual assault and domestic violence -- raising serious questions about his fitness to manage the Department of Defense.
Pete Hegseth: "I'm straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles."
CNN: "A California woman told police that Trump Cabinet pick Pete Hegseth physically blocked her from leaving a hotel room, took her phone, and then sexually assaulted her even though she 'remembered saying "no" a lot,' a police report obtained by CNN shows."
The New Yorker: "A trail of documents, corroborated by the accounts of former colleagues, indicates that Hegseth was forced to step down by both of the two nonprofit advocacy groups that he ran--Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America--in the face of serious allegations of financial mismanagement, sexual impropriety, and personal misconduct."
Penelope Hegseth: "You are an abuser of women -- that is the ugly truth and I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth."
New York Times: "An ex-sister-in-law of Pete Hegseth's submitted a sworn statement to senators on Tuesday that accused Mr. Hegseth, President Trump's nominee for secretary of defense, of being so 'abusive' toward his second wife that she once hid in a closet from him and had a safe word to call for help if she needed to get away from him. ...
"In the affidavit, which was sent on Tuesday to the Armed Services panel, Danielle Hegseth wrote that Mr. Hegseth's second wife, Samantha Hegseth, 'once hid in her closet from Hegseth because she feared for her personal safety.'"

The Price Tag for Trump's Easter Eggs? $15K Under His Price Hikes
While working families dyed potatoes instead of eggs for Easter, Trump's White House is flaunting a 30,000-egg event worth over $15,500 in eggs alone. As Trump's reckless economic agenda continues to skyrocket egg prices, even his own Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is bracing for uncertainty. The contrast couldn't be clearer: Trump and his billionaire backers only care about their own bottom lines while working families struggleto get by.
Here's a look at the White House using over $15,500 worth of eggs for its Easter Egg Roll while working families can barely afford eggs.
NBC News: "White House plans to use real eggs for the Easter Egg Roll, despite a strain on supply and concern over prices"
"'They were saying that for Easter "please don't use eggs. Could you use plastic eggs?" I say we don't want to do that,' President Donald Trump said Wednesday in remarks announcing his new tariffs. The White House did not respond to a request for clarification about who was telling him not to use real eggs. ...
"The Easter Egg Roll, scheduled for April 21, will feature 30,000 eggs for White House guests to decorate and use in games, according to the American Egg Board. ...
"The board had several internal conversations about the optics of providing tens of thousands of eggs for the Easter Egg Roll given the burden egg farmers have faced."
Associated Press: "U.S. egg prices increased again last month to reach a new record-high of $6.23 per dozen despite President Donald Trump's prediction ...
"The increase reported Thursday in the Consumer Price Index means consumers and businesses that rely on eggs might not get much immediate relief."

Crain's New York: "Don't bet on Elise Stefanik winning the governorship"
Crain's New York Business detailed today how Trump loyalist Elise Stefanik "has her work cut out for her" if she runs for governor. Stefanik's record as "a proud, unabashed Trump supporter" - who enthusiastically backs the president's tariffs and efforts to gut health care to give billionaires tax cuts - will be a major anchor for her in any potential race for governor. As Crain's points out, Stefanik's recordas a self-described ultra-MAGA Republican means that she is "no lock to win, or even be particularly competitive" in a gubernatorial race.
Read more from Crain's New York Business about Elise Stefanik's doomed bid for governor:
* But Stefanik is no lock to win, or even be particularly competitive. [...] Her potential gubernatorial bid could fare much worse than Zeldin's.
* [...] All signs point to a Trump backlash not so dissimilar to 2018. Trump's tariffs have destabilized the economy and threatened New York towns along the Canadian border. Inflation may worsen. DOGE and Elon Musk are hated by many Americans.
* Assuming Stefanik is the GOP nominee -- and not Mike Lawler, the Republican congressman also exploring a bid -- she's not going to benefit from the large number of Republican-curious Democrats and independents who filled in the bubble next to Zeldin's name in 2022.
* She'll have the problem many frontline Republican lawmakers are facing: a polarizing president dragging them down.
* In 2022, Zeldin was able to distance himself at least slightly from Trump because Joe Biden was president. Stefanik won't have the same luxury.
